I couldn't love this more. Thank you for always reminding us to remember the greats, to pause, look, listen, and LOVE, and to bring magic from the past into the present. It's so damn refreshing to read about Henry Sloan and Muddy Waters, especially here, where all the cultural criticisms and hot takes are recycled into oblivion. You're an absolute GEM!

Caroline, you are such a thoughtful writer. I loved this little slice of blues education and I love that you listen to Muddy on your drives. It is baffling to consider what we continue to revere and what slips away. I learned about Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Ma Rainey and Big Mama Thornton when I was a counselor at a girls music camp. I couldn't believe that I hadn't found them until I was an adult. Thanks for bringing some Caroline gospel to my Sunday morning :)

speaking of Muddy a great piano player played in his band named Pinetop Perkins replacing Otis Spann in the late 60's. He got his own inspiration (and nickname) from Pinetop Smith who was born in 1904 and lived only 25 years but managed to record "Pinetop's Boogie-Woogie" an instantly recognisable precursor to not only ragtime but rock and roll! It has all the feel of the blues, the restless energy of living in the moment helping to create musical and via that social history.

My dad and I saw a documentary years ago about Pinetop and a couple other supporting figures from that time!

We contain our ancestors powers for us to push further. Are we honoring them? Are we thankful? Thanks for this beautiful reminder 🙌
